Portfolio Preparation for Art College for 16 to 18 Year Olds Short Course

Course description

The application to Foundation or BA courses can be a challenging process. However, help is at hand! This course for teenagers is designed to help you prepare yourself and your portfolio, for the application process. Regardless of your experience or ability this course will encourage to produce more work, and it will give you advice on portfolio content and presentation.

Clear, easy to understand lessons:

  • Our tutors will explain things in easy to understand, accessible English. If they need to use any special terminology they will make sure they explain what they mean.
  • New methodologies will be explained or demonstrated
  • We also offer learning resources for you to access outside of the classroom

All our on campus courses include:

  • Shop in our college shops for any materials you might need
  • Ask questions to your tutor in real time

Topics covered:

  • A variety of projects to build your portfolio
  • Working from the life model and from still life setups
  • Using a range of different media
  • One-to-one tutorial (optional) - max. 30 mins
  • A guided tour to art galleries to help you get inspired
  • Drawing from a life model (unclothed)

Materials

Onsite Short Course Materials

If possible please bring a camera or camera phone to record the process of making work, and the outcomes. Everything needed to complete the course is provided, but please feel free to bring any current sketchbooks or materials you enjoy using.

Online Short Course Materials

A sketchbook (either A4 or A3 size), pencil and pen.

During the course, you will also need:

Sketchbook (either A3 or A4 )

  • Masking tape
  • Eraser
  • Glue stick
  • Multi-surface wipes
  • Pencil: 2B or 4B
  • Charcoal (willow)
  • Watercolour paint - a basic set
  • Fine paint brushes for ink and watercolour paintings
  • Scissors
  • A1 size paper is provided, as well as various art materials.

If possible please bring a camera or camera phone to record the process of making work, and the outcomes. Everything needed to complete the course is provided, but please feel free to bring any current sketchbooks or materials you enjoy using.

To take part in the Online sessions you will need:

  • An up-to-date web browser (we recommend Chrome)
  • Microphone and headphones (a headset with a microphone function is recommended. The built-in microphone in your device would also be fine).
  • Webcam
  • Strong Internet connection - we recommend a minimum of 2 Mbps download, and 1 Mbps upload, faster if possible. You can test your network speed here -
